The Houston Chapter began in 2004 as a support group for families affected by mito disease. In October of 2004 we had our first fund raiser, a Fun Run in downtown Houston at the downtown Sam Houston Park to raise money and awareness to help fight this disease.
In March of 2007, we became an official chapter-the 14th – of the UMDF. In 2007, we had an evening dinner/dance event that honored one of our genetic doctors that has done much for mito research and diagnosis, Dr. Fernando Scaglia.
In 2008, we are having another Fun Run and our first golf tournament-this will be held Oct.15. In 2009, we will be honoring a great doctor, Dr. Mary K. Koenig who has set up the first mito clinic in the southwest and who has a passion for working with mito disease affected patients and families. That will be a dinner/dance in April of 2009.
The Houston Chapter was begun in memory of Christopher Schindler who died from this disease when he was 11. He loved everyone he met and loved to visit with all people no matter their age. He was so funny and handsome and bright and God loving and a joy to have as my son. He gave me amazing gifts and a new appreciation and love of God-I am grateful to God every day for choosing me to be his mom. To see more please go to his website at ww.christophersheart.com.
We have quarterly board meetings and quarterly support meetings and I have started to volunteer at the mito clinic once a month to meet more mito families and get them involved in our group’s support efforts.
