Special Presentation by Dr. Bruce Cohen

As part of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation’s Grand Rounds program, we are pleased to invite you to a special meeting for affected individuals and their families to provide education and information about mitochondrial disease. Family meetings are also suitable for outreach to nurses, therapists, educators, and various allied health professionals.  The format for the family meeting provides information and time for questions and answers.

Bruce H. Cohen, M.D., F.A.A.N

Dr. Cohen has been a staff neurologist in the Neuroscience Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation since 1989. Dr. Cohen served nine years on the Board of Trustees of the UMDF from 1998-2006 and is currently Secretary of the UMDF’s Scientific and Medical Advisory Board. He has been the chairman or co-chairman of the 2000, 2005 and 2008 UMDF Annual Symposium and will be the CME Chairman for the 2009 meeting. This is his second year on the UMDF Grant Review Committee. He has served or is serving in numerous leadership roles including President of the Mitochondrial Medicine Society, Chairman of the Child Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology, Chairman of the Practice Committee of the Child Neurology Society and is an active member in many other professional committees. He is the author of 60 scientific papers, over 30 book chapters and reviews, has participated in over 100 presentations at scientific meetings and delivered 250 invited lectures.   Dr. Cohen loves meeting and talking to those touched by mitochondrial diseases.

Charles A. Mohan, Jr.  CEO, Executive Director, UMDF

Mr. Mohan is the founder of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation.   The UMDF initially began in the basement of Mr. Mohan’s home in 1996 and has grown to a national operation providing Hope, Energy and Life to the thousands of people affected by mitochondrial disease.   Mr. Mohan served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and has chaired both the executive committees and human resource committee. In July of 2006, Mr. Mohan was hired as the UMDF’s Chief Executive Officer where he remains the driving force behind the foundation, helping many families cope with the crisis of mitochondrial disease. Mr. Mohan owns a restaurant in Pittsburgh and has been in the restaurant business since 1963. He also taught at Plum High School from 1972-1979 and has served as a councilman for his local municipality. Chuck and his wife, Adrienne, lost their 15-year-old daughter, Gina, to mitochondrial disease in 1995.
