| The Research Grant Program began in 1997 out of a desire to fund research toward diagnoses, treatments, and cures for mitochondrial disease. Since the program began, the UMDF has funded nearly $8 million of research.

Awarded funds are disbursed over the one, two, or three year life of the grant. Proposals are considered during a one-year grant cycle.
