Bruce H. Cohen, MD, FAAN
Director, Division of Neurology, Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron
Professor of Pediatrics, Northeast Ohio College of Medicine

 Dr. Cohen earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry summa cum laude from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. In 1982, he received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. Following his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, he completed a residency in pediatric neurology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He then served a two-year American Cancer Society fellowship in neuro-oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Cohen joined Cleveland Clinic’s department of Neurology, in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1989, and became chief of Pediatric Neurology, with joint appointments in the Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Center, the department of Neurosurgery and the department of Pediatrics in 1999. In 2011, he joined Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio, as director of Pediatric Neurology. In his role, Dr. Cohen serves on the clinical leadership team of the Akron Children’s Hospital NeuroDevelopmental Science Center.
 
His specialty interests include adult and pediatric neuro-oncology, mitochondrial medicine, neurofibromatosis, neurometabolic diseases and pediatric neurology. He has served on a number of committees for the Children’s Oncology Group, the American Academy of Neurology, the Child Neurology Society, and also as chair of the Infant Brain Tumor Treatment Study. He is an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Pediatrics, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with special qualifications in Child Neurology.

A frequent invited lecturer, Dr. Cohen has made numerous TV and radio appearances, and has received awards from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Cancer Society, the Peter Preuss Foundation and other noted medical research organizations. He is a member of the Child Neurology Society, Professors of Child Neurology, the Mitochondrial Research Society, the Mitochondrial Medicine Society, the American Neurological Association, Sigma Xi North American Scientific Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha fraternal organization. He is also on the editorial boards for Annals of Neurology, Neurology, Medical and Pediatric Oncology, the Journal of Neuro-Oncology, Muscle and Nerve, Mitochondrian and The Coding Institute.
 
Dr. Cohen has been named among the “Best Doctors in Ohio” and “Best Doctors in America” since 1994. He also served on the board of trustees of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation from 1999 to 2006, was a member of the UMDF’s Scientific and Medical Advisory board, and was reappointed to the board of trustees in 2010.
