COVID-19 and Isolation for our Adult Patient Community

The following tips were provided by Gail Wehling and Joy Krumdiack, UMDF Ambassadors.

During this very difficult time for all of us, please remind yourself of the following:

Control what you can control, take it day-by-day, and we will get through this together.

On behalf of our entire adult mitochondrial patient community, we would like to share some helpful tips to assist you physically, emotionally, spiritually and situationally during this trying time.

Physically

• Exposure: First and foremost especially at this time, limit your exposure inside & outside your home. Best, no person-to-person contact. If you need to go out, quick trips in-and-out, take all necessary precautions. Be extra vigilant.

• Take Care of Yourself: Good diet, stay well hydrated, maintain meds, good sleep.
• Home-Sweet-Home: Stay busy, be creative, have some fun.

Emotionally

• Connect: Stay connected with family, friends, neighbors, etc., via phone and/or technology. UMDF has monthly virtual support and education meetings.

• News Updates & Information: Want to stay up-to-date, but limit 24/7 coverage. Be careful where you obtain information especially over the internet.

• Assistance: If need, talk or call someone – a family member, friend, neighbor, etc.

Spiritually

• Day-to-Day: Be present, do not worry about tomorrow, do not jump forward.

• Nature: Daily, connect with nature around you. If able, walk and/or sit around your neighborhood and/or park.

• Prayer & Meditation: Daily, pray and/or meditate. Some houses of worship, now offering services via internet and/or television.

Situationally

• Deliveries: Call your local area grocery store, drug store, restaurants, etc., to deliver to your home or curbside pick-up, carryout or drive-thru service.

• Appointments: Do you need to keep at this time or can you reschedule later date.

• Assistance: If needed, ask for help from a family member, friend, neighbor, etc.
In spite of the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the UMDF wants to reassure you that we will stay connected with our mito-community through our virtual activities and our Ambassador program.
